If you have not discovered Mark Helprin you.... well, you are missing out. If it were not against my principle I would insist you march right over to the bookstore, buy yourself a large, very large coffee--to keep you there for a very long time--and pick up The Pacific. There is not a boring tale among his collection of short stories, but the two I highly recommend as a must-read, are "Il Colore Ritrovato" and "Monday". Do not let them go unread, and then read them again; his are classics.
Helprin understands love. If he were not already married and much aged, I would love him for that alone, then also for his insight, imagination, romance, and stories. Why is a story-teller or a writer more attractive to me than physical attraction?
