If I were asked to teach a class on survival again I would begin with the story of Mike, the headless chicken.
I would say, "Fifteen miles from my (current) home town there used to live a chicken, a headless chicken, insured for $10,000. One day the owner--let's say Mr. Brown--so, Mr. Brown decided to kill the chicken for dinner and went out to cut its neck like he had done to chickens most of his adult life. Not surprisingly the chicken ran off with its head hanging off to the side, but this chicken kept running and running and running.
"The Browns realized they had a chicken that refused to die. Out of respect for the strong-willed chicken the Browns decided to keep him, alive. They found a way to feed Mike--the chicken earned a name--and made a few dimes showing him around the country."
