2003-10-24 - 8:35 p.m. “Roast Turkey” scribbled with a sharpie on a scrap of butcher paper. The paper lies on a cutting board connected to the meat case. As the camera continues to pull away, you begin to see the busy-ness of the place, and then hear it: Zingerman’s, the Movie, begins. “Where’s Mark?” “Gone to get turkey—“, but under breath you hear, “I suppose.” In that tone you glimpse that Mark is unreliable and prone to leaving for no reason. When I saw the start to a stock list, then noticed Mark missing—again—I saw the comedy. The sign was, to us, or me at any rate, a message just like a sign that reads, “gone fishing”. The introduction to a movie just slipped naturally along with my moment of amusement.
