2003-09-27 - 8:00 p.m. You might find it interesting that several entries come up when you search for "arbitrary" on your web-site, in comparison to the three that are shown under "treasure". You resist anything that might seem arbitrary; and you have no treasure, just as you have no hero. Just like a philosopher. What I came here to say, though, and why I searched for those words, is that you have told me, at least, the disturbing things your mother said. All today I could not help asking if it were such a bad thing for our love and our treasure to be decided by us and not appointed by some other force? Before I could list the altertnatives at any one time, a guest would arrive, and I suspect my logic has failed to be creative enough to see what the big deal is about arbitrariness. Stephanie has a logical theory against the romantic and religious theories that there is "the One" for each of us, or at least those destined for matrimony, that is quite as scary as any theory of arbitrariness. The only reason either one is scary is for the fact that human nature is tremendously unreliable, and very likely to act contrary to Our Lord's will. So I fail to have much sympathy toward your resistance. I dislike having little sympathy toward anything important to you. Talk to me further about this.
