I watched About Schmidt last night shortly before my last roommate left for DC. The movie came as the perfect revelation just as I was to become more bored and lonely with my life.
In DC last summer I had some pretty good excuses for sitting in the apartment dreadfully alone on a Friday night while I sipped myself to slumber with a the flowery Reisling. It's an awful way to live. But out here, I realized this morning, I have no excuse. I am responsible for my own loneliness.
When I got home, I started calling and I started e-mailing to get the social wheel rolling here in Ann Arbor, MI. Within a few hours I already had the opportunity to meet a brand-new friend.
This came after an exciting excursion through the Kerrytown district of Ann Arbor. We never saw very much of Ann Arbor in those many excursions for one thing or another. That leaves me with all, but about two blocks, of the city yet to explore. And today I discovered just what adventures might lurk around the corners. This is a city small enough that I can see it in the chunks it needs to be taken in, yet large enough to afford me a year or two of discoveries.
